Property owners in Spain usually think in terms of IBI, but non-resident owners also face a second layer of obligations: Modelo 210, wealth tax, and the fact that paying one bill does not settle the rest.

IBI is the tax that keeps everyone honest

IBI is the local property tax. It is generally payable annually and is based on the cadastral value of the property. It is often the first bill owners see each year, and it is not the same as tax on rental income.

Modelo 210 is the form most owners forget

Non-resident owners in Spain usually file Modelo 210 to declare property tax on the imputed income from the property. This is separate from IBI, and missing it can trigger penalties even if the property tax itself was paid on time.

Wealth tax is not the same as income tax

Spanish wealth tax applies in some cases depending on the value of assets and the resident status. For a non-resident owner, the rules and thresholds are different from those for residents, which is why it is easy to assume the tax calendar is simpler than it really is.

What a proper tax check includes

Paying your IBI does not always mean your tax obligations are complete.
